Paper Daughter tells the story of Tai Wu, a Chinese woman who arrives in San Francisco in 1905 with dreams of a better life. Lured under the pretense of marriage, she is instead sold into a brothel and faces abuse. Desperate, she risks everything to seek help, leading to her rescue by women at a mission house. As Tai Wu rebuilds her life, the 1906 earthquake inadvertently gives her the chance to secure American residency, allowing her to claim citizenship due to lost records. Decades later, she passes on a new identity to a young man, giving him the chance to pursue the American Dream she fought so hard to achieve.
